Gossip Girl 'Empire of the Son' Episode and Fashion Recap

I have to say I quite enjoyed last night's episode of Gossip Girl. Chuck triumphing over Russell Thrope was a long time coming (can the Thorpes please go back to Chicago now?!) and that twist about Bart and Raina's mother at the end is interesting.

Chuck going off the rails, ordering Serena to shut the party down, and hitting the bottle, were not surprising. I half expected him to up and move to Paris and call himself Henry again. Of course, when Chuck hits a wall the first person he turns to is Blair, which pretty much had me yelling at my TV last night while M and my parents' dog shot me strange looks.

I was all like, "You may be Chuck Bass, but Chuck Bass is a jerk! Go and find Blair, I hope you catch her smooching Dan Humphrey. That's right. You heard me. Dan. Humphrey. Bet you didn't see that one coming, Chuck Bass!" The dog seemed most troubled by the developments on Gossip Girl--or my slightly OTT response to them. Either or.

Am I alone here? Granted Blair did end things with Chuck, but it seems every time things don't work out with them he's onto another girl. And not just in someone else's bed, I could handle that, but all mooning over them and in love with them. Barf. And now he's all, "I need Blair. Get me Blair!" As if Serena has enough brain power to carrying out anyone's demands, let alone be a minion or something. Maybe Chuck needs to invest in his own Waldorf-esque entourage.

In the end I know Chuck and Blair are meant to be together, but for the moment I'm quite liking Blair with Dan. He seems to make her much more normal, balanced and happy, something she's been rather unable to achieve with Chuck to date.

As for Serena, I am so done with that girl. She is cut off. When Lily asked her if she'd destroyed the affidavit and Serena's answer was a blank stare I could only roll my eyes. Yes, Lily had kept the document. IN A SAFE DEPOSIT BOX. Not in her underwear drawer! You'd think being around people like Lily and Blair all her life would have taught Serena something, but apparently that's not so. The girl's got nothing. Except for some teary eyes for Ben, who she hadn't thought of in three years. It took Ben's sister trying to ruin Serena's life and actually drugging her to jog the blonde's memory. Girls can be so fickle.

I was happy Lily turned herself in and now we can move on from this whole horrid storyline. I'm all set to watch Chuck and Serena realize that they really want Blair and Dan only to find out that they're--gasp!--too late. Sweet justice indeed.

Pretty Little Liars 'A Person of Interest' Episode & Fashion Recap

Hanna's Black Blouse with Bow by Bebe

Love was in the air on Pretty Little Liars, as well as something quite a bit more sinister. I enjoyed the mystery sort of taking a backseat to the developing relationships. I have to say I'm quite enjoying Hanna and Caleb (his comment about the queen of handbags being Dora the Explorer in the woods was great) as well as Spencer and Toby. But Caleb being shady and in one some scheming with an unknown baddie? Boo, hiss. Although I do wonder who the mystery person is. Maybe Ian? I also feel bad that now Spencer seems to have gotten herself in the middle of quite a mess.

Aria is a bit too needy/clingy/whiny for my taste. Nice that she confessed to Ezra, though, and the "thank you for looking at me the same way you did yesterday" was touching. As for Emily I'm not sure if I'm loving this new romance--honestly, this swim girl seems to have a truckload of issues--and what about Maya? Talk about out of sight, out of mind. And what was with the karaoke in the dive bar? Seemed a little too Glee for a truck stop. What did you think about the episode?

Oscar Fashion 2011: 83rd Academy Awards

Not sure what you guys thought about the Oscars last night, but for me both the red carpet and the show were pretty underwhelming. When I heard Anne Hathaway and James Franco were hosting I immediately thought it was a strange and rather random choice. It was worse than I thought. Why Franco? I still can't figure it out. And Anne seemed to be trying sooo hard. At least I got to see some costume changes. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, along with Sandra Bullock, were my fave parts of the evening. Glad Colin and Natalie won too.

One of my fave looks was the shimmery Calvin Klein that Gwyneth wore on the red carpet. I especially liked the touch added by the whimsical Vuitton jewellery. Her sequined, one-shouldered Michael Kors was also pretty, but she seemed much more over-tanned under the stage lights and it was unfortunate for her that she had to sing right after Florence Welch.

Mandy Moore and Florence Welch also performed and I thought the dresses they wore while doing so (the blue Monique Lhuillier gown and orange Roksanda Ilincic, respectively) were better than the ones they wore on the red carpet.

Purple Power

Few people could pull off Cate Blanchett's Givenchy gown (I heard the bodice referred to as toilet-esque) but I liked it when I first saw it on the red carpet. It's not a perfect dress, but it is unique and it works for Cate, I think.

I wanted to love Mila's Elie Saab, but something about it was just off. This shade of lavender is pretty but can easily veer off into bridesmaid territory. I'm always a fan of lace, but the pieces on the boob area just screamed pasties to me and I'm not loving the sheer panels on the skirt. And I wasn't feeling the hair.

Scarlett's custome Dolce and Gabbana dress is
another that I almost liked but just didn't. Could
have been the hair/makeup too.

Overall Natalie Portman was pretty in purple Rodarte.
Her tassel earrings were my fave part of the outfit.

Neutral Sparkle

Hailee was adorable in Marchesa. Loved the hairdo.

I know they're different, but I felt like Halle Berry (in Marchesa) and Hilary Swank (in Gucci Premiere) were kind of wearing the same dress. Pretty, boring. Pretty boring. Also, I thought that bodice made Hilary look extra angular, maybe she could have thrown on a pair of dangly earrings to soften things a bit.

I didn't love Mandy Moore's Monique Lhullier.

Michelle Williams' Chanel wasn't a fave,
either,  although it was better than the
horrendous Golden Globes' Valentino.

White Out

Nicole Kidman's Dior Couture gown fell into the same category as Cate Blanchett's dress for me. I think the dress worked for Nicole. And that Fred Leighton necklace she was wearing was huge beautiful.

Celine Dion in Armani Privé looked smart and sophisticated.
The streamlined column showed off that green sparkler
to perfection.

For some reason I kind of loved that Melissa Leo
dropped the f-bomb during the telecast. I think her
Marc Bouwer gown also suited her.

Not So Basic Black

Camila Alves looked laidback and comfortable in her glamorous Kaufman Franco gown and center-parted bun. Matthew McConaughey, on the other hand, was the wrong colour.

Fun to see Busy Phillips as Michelle Williams' date.
She looked good.

I heard Reese Witherspoon in Armani Privé referred
to as a 60s Malibu Barbie. Apt, but not attractive.
Kinda of reminiscent of that Julia Roberts Valentino too.

The dress isn't bad but this photo makes
Sharon Stone look possessed.

Tomato Hues

Anne Hathaway's red Valentino was classic
and maybe a bit too expected, but I didn't
hate it or the Vivier pumps she wore with it.
post for more on her fashion last night.

I thought Jennifer Hudson looked smashing in Versace.
Sure there was some boob issues, but this dress
is sooo much better than that bolero disaster she
wore to the Oscars the last time.

Jennifer Lawrence's Calvin Klein isn't bad but
I feel like, if you're nominated for Best Actress,
you should bother to make an effort. Even
if you know you're not going to win.

Nothing wrong with Sandra Bullock's Vera Wang.
Granted I tend to dislike red at these types of events,
but Sandra was so cute when presenting that I
can't think about much else.

How about we have a Sandra, Robert Downey Jr.
and Jude Law hosting trifecta next year?

What is Rhea Dhurman wearing?
And what is with her roots?

Penelope Cruz is va va va vooom in L'Wren Scott.
Mama mia indeed.
And for some reason I was remembering when
she "dated" Tom Cruise. Seems so long ago.

Blue Hues

I thought Amy Adams' L'Wren Scott was a
smashing colour and it looked great on her.
I liked the cap sleeve trend we were seeing
last night. I didn't love Amy's unnecessary necklace.

Marisa Tomei in vintage. She still looks great but
her bodice could have fit better. Love the bracelet.
