Kim Kardashian's Engagement Ring and a Fashion Extravaganza with the Royals, Obamas, Camerons & Cannes

So Kim Kardashian's engaged. The ring is apparently 20.5 karats and features a 16.5-karat emerald-cut centre stone flanked by 2-karat trapezoids.

Kim's engagement ring from Kris Humphries is said to have cost a cool $2 million--literally more than Kim's house. I wish those two krazy kids the best of luck. I, mean, really, how could Kim not have married a man named Kris (with a "K"). [via]

Battle of the Belts:
Michelle Obama and Samantha Cameron served lunch at a BBQ
at 10 Downing Street today. Michelle wore a black-and-white
Tracy Reese dress. The sparkly belt is a bit much for pasta salad, no?
SamCam wore a cotton-twill dress with an electric green belt
from Jonathan Saunders. [via]

Can't say I really loved the white Tom Ford gown that Mrs. Obama wore to the state dinner last night. It's not offensive or anything, there's just...something off about it. Maybe the gloves. Ford is a great choice, though, an American with a HQ in London. Samantha Cameron wore Emilia Wickstead to the event at Buckingham Palace. [via]

We got our first look at post-honeymoon William and Kate, looking tanned and relaxed as they welcomed the Obamas to England during the Americans state visit. Apparently the meeting was short and the newlyweds didn't participate in any of the other official events, ostensibly to underscore the fact that they're not officially working members of the family.

Anyhoo, Kate wore another Reiss dress, this time the Shola Bandage Dress, soon to be named the Kate, the Catherine, the Duchess or something of the sort. After Kate was seen wearing the dress the Reiss website crashed, ostensibly with people trying to get their hands on their own version. The Duchess has a great knack of making relatively affordable outfits (£175) look totally first rate. Kate--Catherine, whatever--accessorized with simple black pumps and an Anya Hindmarch clutch (the Maud, I believe).

Michelle Obama wore a colourful outfit from Barbara Tfank.
Not loving it, maybe its the pink bolero that's throwing me off.
I think, in this case, Kate wins the style wars.

And I do like Kate so I don't want to criticize, but do her arms look like they're veering into scary skinny territory in some of these pics? Just me? Maybe its the angle, but don't they have food in the Seychelles? [via]

I liked Michelle Obama's second outfit--her bright purple dress is from Roksanda Ilincic's Pre-Fall collection and her blue coat is by Narciso Rodriguez--better than the first. Samantha Cameron looked chic in Peter Pilotto and grey snakeskin Jimmy Choo platform heels. [via]

Michelle and SamCam seem to get along quite well.
Check out the Prime Minister's chic digs. [via]

When arriving in England Michelle Obama wore a
bold blue suit from Preen with a printed blouse. [via]

And now on to Cannes where trends like wearing white with emeralds,
long sleeved gowns and deep blues were all the rage...

Uma in a Body Hugging, Long Sleeved Electric Blue Armani Prive

Jury member Uma Thurman has one of those bodies just made for wearing clothes. I'm pretty sure I loved just about everything she wore. And that she wore most of her gowns with flat sandals and did so with aplomb.

I loved Bianca Balti's white Alberta Ferretti gown, which
the Italian model-actress accessorized with de Grisogono jewels.

Cristiano Ronaldo's GF and Sports Illustrated model Irina Shayk
also went for white (Atelier Versace) and green at the amfAR gala.

Eva Herzigova wore her emeralds with a shorts suit.

Doesn't Jane Fonda look great? The actress sported dangling emerald earrings and a long-sleeved Roberto Cavalli gown at the amfAR gala during the Cannes festival.

Longtime emerald fan Angelina Jolie paired jewelry from her own line with an understated, but very pretty, nude dress from Salvatore Ferragamo accessorized with a brown belt and nude pumps.

Angelina's style if often a bit too boring for my taste but I think her classic looks worked well at Cannes, including the strapless, slit-up-to-there Atelier Versace gown she wore. But what's up with Brad?

Blue was a huge colour on the Cannes red carpet with everyone from Uma to Aishwarya Rai jumping on the blue bandwagon, many in dresses with long sleeves. Jodie Foster, for example, looked classically sophisticated in Armani.

Bar Refaeli looked stunning in a dark blue, long sleeved Cavalli with plunging back and silver embellished cut-outs. Is that fashion code for "Eat your heart out Leo"?

Actress Gaia Bermani Amaral also wore a dark blue, long-sleeved Cavalli.
She accessorized with a Sergio Rossi clutch.

Karolina Kurkova wore a sparkly blue Armani Prive.

And how hot is Penelope Cruz in Stella McCartney?
I adored this look right down to the Casadei pumps.
Much better than the frou-frou Marchesa she wore later.

Not Cannes, but Penelope also looked smokin' in a form-fitting, futuristic long sleeved red Armani Prive gown at the Pirates of the Caribbean premiere in Munich recently. Baby? What baby?

Cheryl Cole appears to be a fan of the long sleeves, wearing gowns by both Stephane Rolland and Roberto Cavalli. I much prefer the second look.

Bar Refaeli in another knockout Cavalli, this time champagne-gold at amfAR. Elisabetta Canalis looked pretty hot at that party too in a bronze-gold Cavalli. Milla Jovovich also wore a metallic gold gown but hers was from Atelier Versace.
I hardly ever like Kirsten Dunst but I thought her yellow Chloe day dress was one of the prettiest looks of the whole festival. The Chanel she wore to accept the Best Actress award wasn't too shabby either, although I don't get the black shoes.

Tilda Swinton is also one I'm often on the fence about,
but she hit it out of the park at Cannes.

I'm a fan of Jessica Chastain's red Oscar de la Renta
and bright lemon yellow Zac Posen.

Some other pretty looks:

Italian Blogger Chiara Ferragni

SJP in Elie Saab

Diane Kruger is movie star glam in Calvin Klein.

There were a lot of horrible outfits--from Charlotte Gainsbourg
and Bryce Dallas Howard on--but I'm not going to go in to them all here.

I'd love to hear who your favourites/least favourites were.

Oh, and what do you think of this fuchsia dress on Katie Holmes? I kind of love it. The dress is from Katie's own line, Holmes and Yang, which I didn't even know existed. [via]

And while I'm not the biggest Cristiano Ronaldo fan
how cute is his baby son? [via]

How has your week been going?

Savage Beauty: The 2011 Met Gala's Tribute to McQueen

My fave of the night was Gisele in McQueen.
I usually don't like red-on-red but she just looks
too statuesque to believe. Gorgeous.

Now, please Gisele, stop telling that hubs of yours to keep
his hair long. Good strategy for keeping all the other women
away, but, really, it's gone too far now.

I hate to say it but Taylor Swift looked beautiful
in a dramatic J. Mendel.

Ditto Gwyneth in Stella McCartney.
There were tons of shimmery nude looks this year.

SJP dressed, appropriately, in McQueen.
She has a very 60s First Lady vibe going on.

Not surprisingly Salma was also in McQueen.

Ashley Greene in one-of-a-kind Donna Karan.
Somewhere a Jonas is weeping.

Pregnant Jessica Alba glowed in Ralph Lauren.
Not loving the skirt but she's gorgeous.

Also pregnant Kate Hudson showed up in a very
similar look courtesy of Stella McCartney.
Nude, strapless, sparkly headpiece = pregnant
style du jour, apparently.

Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren = simple and classic.
The earrings are the perfect accessory.

Jessica Stam rocked a feminine 50s prom look
from Tommy Hilfiger paired with some killer shoes
and Chopard jewels.

I can't say I loved Blake's drapey Chanel.

Diane Kruger looked glam and
sophisticated in Jason Wu.

Loved the addition of the earrings to Tory Burch's outfit.

Bar Rafaeli looked smokin' and her
turquoise and teal accessories were spot on.

There was lots of gold last night, too.
Like Claire Danes in liquid gold Calvin Klein.

Karen Elson looking gorgeous in McQueen.

Ageless Iman in Stella McCartney.
And you can see Amber Valletta in the background
wearing black Stella McCartney.

Anna dello Russo added some gold to her McQueen too.

Loved the colour of J. Lo's Gucci.

I don't know if I loved Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's
pink Burberry Prorsum dress but it sure was sexy.

Isabel Lucas looked like a boho goddess
in her Louis Vuitton.

Amy Adams' L'Wren Scott fit like a glove.
Not feeling the big braid.

Zoe Saldana played it safer than usual but
she looks gorgeous and summery in her
lemon-y Calvin Klein.

Jennifer Hudson looked fab in neutral
Vera Wang while the designer opted to
go the bright colour route in chartreuse.

I think Ginnifer Goodwin looked like a hot mess in her green Topshop dress. The dress itself was a great colour--and daring--but her hair and make-up were off to me.

Doutzen Kroes looked radiant in red Giambattista Valli.

Stella McCartney (and belts!) were pretty popular last night.
I love the colour of Eva Mendes' 70s-ish blue gown.

I like Brooklyn Decker's hair better longer, but the bright
pink of her simple Michael Kors gown is great fun.

Mary-Kate's red vintage number isn't flattering, neither is her stringy hair.
I do like the green jewels.

This is the best I've seen Madonna look in awhile
but I wasn't totally sold out on her star spangled McCartney.

I lot of the most dramatic looks of the night were black--or black and white. And while I didn't love every one the Met Gala is one of those great events that people can really take sartorial chances. Like Christina Ricci in Zac Posen.

Edgy glam thy name is Karolina.
In Gaultier.

Beyonce looked very...Beyonce in her black
and gold Pucci, which was so tight the
singer needed to people to help her up the stairs.

I'm on the fence about Leighton Meester's LV ensemble.
Maybe a bit too strappy strappy for me but I
did enjoy her long ponytail.

Crystal Renn went for the drama in Zac Posen
and a weird updo

Ashley was the better of the two Olsens, although her
sleeves call to mind a milkmaid or something.

I love Shalom Harlow and I think she pulled off this Marchesa,
which would have sunk a lesser woman.

Penelope Cruz played it a bit safer in Oscar de la Renta but she looked beautiful nonetheless. Baby weight? What baby weight? She does seem to prefer these types of silhouettes but they suit her.

Not really feeling Sofia Vergara's floral
Carolina Herrera. Kind of...yawn.

Rihanna's Stella McCartney is like something
Cher would wear. Performing in Vegas. Just no.

Demi Moore protests her lost Royal Wedding invitation by sporting a
fascinator and some type of Prabal Gurung-designed wild bird to the Met.

Feathers played a part in some of the worst looks of the night. See: Margherita Missoni. She's gorgeous but this Missoni is some kind of bad Easter explosion.

A white gown. A fascinator. Very Royal Wedding-inspired, but is Serena Williams supposed to be bride or guest? I think she fails at either in this Oscar de la Renta.

Nicole Richie's vintage Jason Wu look?
Another fail for me.

New mom Miranda Kerr is smokin' hot but
this Marchesa explosion of tulle is a
little too crazy ballerina for me.

I've never been a huge LeeLee Sobieski fan
but she looks great in this floaty white Vionnet.

You would think that Sarah Burton would be all white-dressed-out but au contraire. The McQueen designer showed up in a very romantic one.

Oh, Fergie...the only thing that saves this
photo is Josh Duhamel.

Daphne Guinness paid appropriate homage to
McQueen in...McQueen.

Aimee Mullins in a dramatic custom Olivier Theyskens.
